Fantasy Adventure Novel

Life of Pi is a fantasy adventure novel by Yann Martel. Some people may think it is such an unrealistic story, overwhelming with religious belief. It is impossible for Pi, the protagonist, to survive 227 days after a shipwreck with a tiger named Richard Parker. But it did happen in the story. That’s why the we have the word “miracle”. I believe there are 2 main messages from the author. The first one is that humankind is linked to other parts of the universe. Destroying others is equal to killing ourselves. But the second one is even more important: Belief is the savior of the civilization. In Noah’s Ark, god punished human for their guilt but sparing Noah’s family for their belief in god. “Life of Pi” is like another version of Noah’s Ark where “the most dangerous animal in the zoo is man” and only Pi who trusted god could survive. It is undeniable that we are living in a world with social inequality, moral collapse, terrorism, natural exploitation…as a consequence of pragmatic culture. High intelligence without conscience seemed to cause more harm than expected. It is time to ask ourselves “How to be human?”
