This is not only considered as a crime but academic dishonesty proper citation and referencing are two important components in academic writing. In order to avoid plagiarism of ideas, words, videos, audios diagrams, data, websites, and fact must be properly cited and referenced.
Why is accurate citation necessary in academic writing?
Today, we live in a digital world, a society with advanced technology, where one has the ability to easily access information at no cost. Many students especially those in their early stage of education have been caught for plagiarizing be it intentional or unintentional. But due to the fact that we live in a society where there is fake news, or alternative facts, actual facts sometimes collide with one another resulting to conflicting information. Citation in most cases include quotes that help us back up our ideas and decisions during academic writing.
The importance of accurate referencing
Listing citation, proper referencing helps us to acknowledge the work of previous writers, in our own work. It also enables us to give credit to researchers whose work we extracted vital information from. It also provides evidence to support our ideas, facts or claims in our own work. It should be noted that accurate referencing easily facilitates our reader’s ability to trace the sources of all information we might have used in our research. In fact, good referencing also shows how much we have read, and how broadly our research was conducted.
The bottom line in writing a paper, requires tremendous effort, it is not only tedious or time consuming. Thus, on the other hand following the rules is much more important. In order to write a quality paper, we have to be very cautious of the fact that accurate citation and referencing does not only make us better writers but it is necessary to avoid any academic dishonesty.
